Fault code reading and live data testing to find what's actually wrong before anything gets replaced.
A fault code tells you which circuit is unhappy. It does not tell you which part to replace. The difference between those two things is what diagnostics is for.
Beyond the code reader
Anyone can plug in a reader and get a code. Interpreting it means live data, wiring checks and knowing which sensors commonly lie. A code pointing at an oxygen sensor frequently turns out to be an air leak upstream of it.
What you get
The codes stored, what they actually indicate, what we tested to narrow it down, and a price to put it right. In writing, not a verbal shrug.
Intermittent faults
The hard ones. A fault that only appears when warm, or over a particular speed, needs the conditions reproducing. Tell us exactly when it happens — that detail saves diagnostic time and therefore money.

Questions
My light came on then went off again. Do I still need it looked at?
Usually yes. The code is normally still stored even once the light clears, and a fault that comes and goes tends to come back worse.
Can you just clear the code for me?
We can, but we'd be doing you no favours. Clearing a code without fixing the cause turns off the warning, not the problem, and it wipes the data that would have helped diagnose it.
